Sleep more.

Some fun facts about sleeping:

  • Approx 1/3 of our lives are spent sleeping, so we might as well make sure we are getting good sleep!

  • Research has proven that our sleep is affected by the full moon. Many of us sleep less and go to bed later than usual during this phase.

  • It should take an average of 10-15 minutes to fall asleep (if it takes you less than that, you need more sleep)

  • That afternoon lull is legitimate. 2am and 2pm are peak times when we are most tired.

  • Staying awake for 16 straight hours is equal to having a blood alcohol content of .05%

  • Not getting enough sleep can lead to overeating and create stress and anxiety.

  • Key contributors to insomnia include poor diet and exercise, stress, and constant access to digital information.

  • Not getting enough sleep can lead to weight gain, diabetes, heart disease, lowered immunity, premature aging of skin, poor judgment, irritability and anxiety, depression, increased forgetfulness, poor balance and coordination, thyroid/hormone issues.

What can you do to improve sleep habits? Try to create a regular schedule of going to bed earlier. As humans, we are the only mammals who try to avoid sleep! If you need an alarm clock to wake up, it means you are not getting enough sleep. Figure out what time you need to go to bed to avoid having to use one. Avoid any devices one hour before bedtime – it will help calm your brain to allow you to fall asleep more quickly.
